I get to the office at about 6:30am, so I get a pretty great choice of the unreserved stalls. I always park in the same awesome spot. I pay $15 a day, which stings, but I survive.
The guy next to me has a collection of new and old BMW’s, I have no idea who he is or what he does, but we’ve exchanged greetings. Both of us are glad the other guy parks there.
Alpina!

I’m get to park directly in front of my office. Took 7 years to claw my way to that point, but it beats what most of my coworkers have to do: park off site and walk a block or two.
Also $15 a day is a fucking crime.

The parking, combined with the gas is tough. We have the highest gas prices in North America here. And the ST takes 94 octane which is about $1.70/L right now.

That’s nice. Except for the $15 a day. Can you get a tax write-off for that?
I park in a spot right next to the furthest handicap spot, which no one uses because it’s the furthest one. I also have the smallest car.
Sometimes I like to park in the 1.5 wide spot left by being the end, closest to the building, where there wasn’t enough room for two spots. The smallest car in the largest spot. But I park close to the line, as if it were a regular spot, just to mess with people.

I work in the suburbs, so it’s just a giant outdoor lot. There’s always parking spots available and always excess space in the back for those that want to take a couple spaces.

$15 per day?! Highway robbery to park at work for damn near $4k per year.

Does he really park this way? wow

i dont even know where the parking place is yet just got told i start a new job tomorow and to just chain me bike to the fence when i get there till they give me a clocking key and stuff
(obviously about half an hour after finding out i have a new job confirmed my old job calls me to tell me they have work for me again.... was kinda fun turning them down)

He does, but I don’t care. Ample room for my ST and his car, and it makes it easier for him to get out.

It is so attractive. Together we class up the joint. It is all boring ass grey 3 series, Lexus and Mercedes vehicles in the lot.

Giant free parking lot with two parking decks. To park in the deck by my office I need to be here around 7. We also have ample parking 15 or so airliners outside and hangars that will accommodate another 12 or so.

I park in a sea of other FCA vehicles.

Outside and furthest from the building and non-car coworkers. $15 is insane but at least your car isn’t exposed to the elements all day I suppose.

Holy shit. And I’ve been complaining about the 3.23/gallon I pay for 91. If you break that down it’s only .85/ liter.
![]() 02/06/2018 at 11:01 |

Bad enough to make me walk to work. Even our work vans have to be parked on the street.

We pay 1/l of 91
It used to be .75/l

At first I thought you said $1.70/gal and I was like BITCH WHAT YOU’RE COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT?!?! Then took a double take and roasted myself

Oh man $450 a month just to park at work sounds like a crime! Well I guess its less since you can subtract weekends but still its gotta be $300+. Here I was thinking it was rough to park three cars at my apartment in reserved spots for $110 a month.
It is very time dependent for parking at work. Coming in the morning any time before 8, there are plenty of open spaces right near the door but if I go for a late lunch then good luck finding anything nearby. I have to get “creative” usually and just park somewhere and hope its okay to park there. But it seems to be generally accepted.

Try $31 a day if I don’t make it in time for the “early bird” rate (which I usually don’t), or $18 if I do. Ugh.

That’s life though sadly.
The way I look at it, if it enables me to get a job that pays like $10K (hypothetically) more a year, it is worth the net gain.

Absolutely. Still robbery though, lol.

When I get a chance I’ll click a pic. But here’s the detail about parking situation specific to me:
Most spots are approximately wide enough to accommodate a 1-tonne pickup (refinery / Texas).
My spot:
-corner spot
- 1.5 times wider than aforementioned most spots.
- visible from my office window
Most importantly, it is assigned to me for the year 2018. With my name on it. Reserved for me.
I can park my SS, 7 series or the Grand Marquis or any vehicle I’d like without any concern.
I can drive out / drive in, without any concern of losing a spot. Or losing the best parking spot in the refinery.

When I drove to Canada with my Miata, thanks to the exchange rate at the time gas was actually cheaper than it was in the States. Even though it was $1.15/L for premium, the exchange rate was $0.75USD to $1CAD. So that ~$4.35CAD per gallon became only $3.26USD per gallon. And premium gas in NY before crossing over was around $3.40 per gallon. At first doing the math I was complaining about paying more than $4 a gallon until I realized the exchange rate really helped me out. There were a lot of things that felt like free money because of that exchange rate!
![]() 02/06/2018 at 11:16 |

Yeah that helps for Americans, but here in Vancouver, the prices are so high it still isn’t worth it.
I’ll actually drive down and pay the exchange rate to fill up in the US if I have my truck on the road.

I get in early, almost always park in the same spot, up against a pillar. I then walk in and laugh at the SUV drivers who are afraid to park near a pillar.
My employer is pretty cool in that only a couple of the real bigwigs (CEO, CFO) have reserved spots - for everyone else, it is first come, first served.
There are a few interesting cars, but loads of Camcords, Subarus, CUVs.

I can park in any number of outdoor lots, but where I work on a college campus, the lots with space aren’t always near the building(s) I need to be in.
Yesterday I parked in a weird lot and thought I had a nice exchange with the woman next to me in her white GTI, but she let her door hit my car when she opened it. It wasn’t bad enough to get all fussy about it, but I was still pissed. Won’t be parking there again.
This morning it’s snowing and it’s a busy class day, so there are no spaces anywhere. I almost parked in a metered space in town just to avoid walking 1/4 mile to the building I needed to be in this morning. But even the metered space in town is like, 25 cents for 2 hours. 75 cents would cover my whole work day because I’m only on campus for six hours a day.
Instead, this morning, I parked in a spot that SHOULD BE a space, but for some reason it’s marked in paint on the pavement as no parking... but when there’s 2" of snow on the ground, there’s no reason not to park there.

Oh of course, this was in Ontario so it was a bit more affordable! ~$6.44CAD is crazy talk for a gallon of gas. That is more than I saw in Italy even. No idea what it was in Norway since they use Monopoly money there.

Hey, that’s only between $3,700 and $7,440 a year for parking.

Drive? To work? Everyday? You crazy. I park at the park and ride. I catch a pretty late bus so I’m usually in the outdoor lot.
It’s about an 8 mile bus ride from there. All for the cost of free as my work pays for my metro transit pass. It adds about 20 minutes to my day(10 minutes each way) but it’s pretty damn worth it.
When I drive I pay 7 dollars and usually snag a spot adjacent to a concrete area so I have decent space for my car.

The company I work with has a few campuses around town and I used to have access to a parking garage attached to the one I originally worked at. It was small, but had a few “safe” spots and there was generally room available below the top deck before around 7:30. Recently, they moved my team to a newly-built facility which was an improvement in many regards... except for the parking. It’s just a large, open lot now, and because the property was all built/designed from scratch, there aren’t any good spots protected by curbs, walkways, diagonals, etc. on both sides. I just park out in no-man’s land now and hope that it doesn’t get busy enough to fill up.

I do take the bus sometimes, which cuts costs substantially but also takes twice as long and involves more touching of strangers than I’m usually ready for first thing in the morning.

My work garage is nice, but it causes serious parking lot envy. Lots and lots of car people park at my garage, some with a fair amount of money, but even the low buck stuff shows enthusiasm.

Ugh, Seattle parking is the worst. I used to have to street park downtown sometimes. Now i street park at my house (23rd and madison) which is like...just bad enough to be annoying. You can usually find a spot, but my car has been hit bad enough to need body work like 3 times in the past 8 years or so.

Where the hell do you work?
![]() 02/06/2018 at 13:50 |

Yeah, it’s not great. At this point I basically just have one reasonably trusted parking garage or pay lot in each neighborhood and make a beeline there even if it’s not the closest spot to where I’m going. The garage at work is good for a downtown parking garage but it sure is expensive. I’m kind of splitting time between two “homes” at the moment which is not the most convenient, but thankfully the parking situations at both are pretty easy—off-street at one and the end of a dead end street at the other.

My old 2nd gen.. I’m liking the new one more - it doesn’t have everything back on it yet, waiting for the snow to melt.

Work subsidizes a garage for us downtown, we pay like $80/month. About half the going rate for the area. It’s a couple blocks away, but that’s ok. It’s a useful spot for lots of other reasons besides work. Our I can take the bike and just park in the shop.

I have free, name reserved parking in a professional garage attached to the hospital. The spot is on an end where no one can box me in, and I got to specifically choose it when I started work there. I negotiated it as part of my hire. I feel especially blessed, even though it is a 10 minute walk through two elevators and several connected buildings to my office. My graduate student got hit by a truck crossing the street to the school’s employee garage a couple of years ago and spent a couple of mights in the hospital. Having been hit by a car before and paralyzed by it, I am so glad for where I park now.

That’s a good deal! I’m thinking parking maybe in my next round of negotiations in terms of compensation. Maybe next year.
